Current description
Moabit is a densely built Ortsteil of Mitte, enclosed by the Spree, the Berlin-Spandau shipping canal, the Westhafen canal and the Charlottenburg connecting canal. Twenty-six road, rail and pedestrian bridges connect it to the surrounding city. 1
The Kieze differ markedly. Stephankiez, Lübecker Straße and Thomasiusstraße have late nineteenth-century block structures. The Zillesiedlung dates from the 1970s. Along Heidestraße, the Europacity development of residential, office and mixed buildings is largely complete, with individual plots scheduled for completion by around 2026. 2
Moabit West combines late nineteenth-century residential streets with the industrial area in the Huttenkiez and the Westhafen. The Westhafen is described today as a location for offices and events, while the harbour complex retains its storage and transshipment buildings. 3 4
Why visit
Moabit suits a walk that combines everyday life, urban redevelopment and history. The Moabit West neighbourhood walk in April 2025 ran from the Otto playground via Otto-Platz, the Elbi playground and Essener Park to the neighbourhood shop on Krefelder Straße. The route showed places shaped by community work and local participation. 5
Turmstraße is planned as the shopping and supply centre for Moabit. The Kleine Tiergarten and the Ottopark are intended to provide recreation, leisure and connections between the northern and southern quarters. 6
Further north, the Westhafen is a continuous harbour complex with an administration building, warehouses and technical structures. Remains of the former prison wall and officials' housing are visible near Lehrter Straße and Invalidenstraße. 4 7
When to skip
Moabit is not a good short stop if you want a single compact heritage area. The official descriptions spread the defining places across residential quarters, shopping streets, green spaces, railway land and industrial areas. That is a travel judgement based on these sources and remains unverified. 2 3
History
- 1685 to 1717: Settlement of what is now Moabit began in 1685. In 1717 King Friedrich Wilhelm I settled Huguenots between the present-day Alt-Moabit street and the Spree. Powder mills and military installations occupied large areas of the district. 1
- 1842 to 1881: The royal cellular prison was built outside the city gates as a Prussian model prison for solitary confinement and opened in 1849. Parts of the former prison wall and officials' housing survived, while the prison itself was badly damaged in the Second World War and demolished in 1955; the present remand prison and the old criminal court were built between 1877 and 1881. 7
- 1861 to 1910: Moabit was incorporated into Berlin in 1861. The Hobrecht development plan of 1862 expanded housing construction, and industrialisation together with the railway produced densely inhabited tenements alongside workplaces; this late nineteenth-century fabric still defines the Ortsteil today. 8
- 1914 to 1944: The Westhafen was built from 1914 and began operating in 1923 with two basins, an administration building, warehouses and technical structures. More than 32,000 Jewish people were deported from the Moabit goods station between March 1942 and January 1944. 4 9
- 1945 to 2001: Large parts of the older building stock survived the Second World War. The Fritz-Schloß-Park was created from wartime rubble on a former parade ground, and the political division of the city and the building of the Wall left Moabit on the edge of the western half; its older quarters were largely spared wholesale redevelopment. 8
