Current description
Dense inner-city Berlin: Gründerzeit blocks, proper squares, and around Nollendorfplatz the oldest continuously queer quarter in the city. The Akazienkiez is the calmer half, cafés and restaurants and small shops on the main run, residential once you turn off it. 1
Nollendorfplatz station picked up a second name in June 2026, “im Regenbogenkiez”. 2 Whether the quarter it names is thriving depends on who you ask: writing for a queer readership in 2025, Siegessäule called Motzstraße busy again while counting the rents and the closures in the same breath. 3 Which of those wins is unverified.
Why visit
Two things, and one of them is a Wednesday.
The Winterfeldtplatz market, Wednesdays and Saturdays, is the reason to be in Schöneberg during the day; it pulls Berliners as well as visitors, which not every market here manages. 4 The other is Rathaus Schöneberg, which governed West Berlin for forty years and still reads like it. 5
When to skip
Avoid Winterfeldtplatz if you want quiet: Wednesday 08:00 to 14:00 and Saturday 08:00 to 16:00 are the busy windows. 4 The Akazienkiez fills up again in the evening, and local guidance asks for quiet after 22:00, which tells you what the streets are like before then. 1 For the district as a whole, no reliable current source gives a genuinely quiet period. unverified.
History
- 1900 to 1914: the Bayerisches Viertel went up as an upper-middle-class quarter, and the new Rathaus Schöneberg, built for a fast-growing city administration, was finished in 1914. 6 7
- 1933 to 1945: the Jewish residents of the Bayerisches Viertel were persecuted, deported and murdered. The Rathaus came through the war badly damaged. The older one at Kaiser-Wilhelm-Platz did not come through at all. 6 7
- 1948 to 1950: rebuilt in simplified form, it became the seat of West Berlin's government. The Freiheitsglocke went into the tower in 1950. 7 5
- 1963 and 1989: Kennedy spoke outside it on 26 June 1963. On 10 November 1989, the day after the Wall opened, about 20,000 people gathered in the same square. 5
- 1990s to 2026: after reunification the Senate and Abgeordnetenhaus left for Mitte and the building went back to district work. Berlin found 147 million euros for its renovation in March 2026. 5 8
