Current description
Two places share one name and not much else. Steglitz is ordinary working Berlin: mixed housing, green space, and the shops stacked along Schloßstraße. 1 Zehlendorf, further out, is forest and water, villas and single-family houses and housing estates, with the Free University supplying most of the public life there is. 2
Why visit
Three reasons, and they are nowhere near each other.
The Botanischer Garten, for the collections and the historic glasshouses. 3 Water, which means the ferry to Pfaueninsel or the sand at Strandbad Wannsee. And the Cold War, unavoidable out here: this was the American sector, and the Glienicker Brücke sits at its edge. 4 2
When to skip
Skip it if you want somewhere you can walk across. Shopping streets, wooded suburbs and lakeside excursion country are all inside one district here, spread thin, and moving between them eats the day. 1 2
Two things are broken in 2026. Strandbad Wannsee opened for the season with pipes still burst from the January power outage, and as of March the toilets and showers were only partly usable. 5 Filandastraße and Neue Filandastraße are dug up until 12 October 2026, with cyclists diverted. 6
History
- Around 1170 to 1242: the original settlement, “Ur-Zehlendorf”, sat near what is now Museumsdorf Düppel, then moved to the present village centre. By 1242 Zehlendorf was on record as a village of the Cistercian monastery at Lehnin, farming, with a church, an inn, a mill and a smithy. 7
- 1792 to 1838: Prussia's first paved road to Potsdam, then the Berlin to Potsdam railway. Both ran through here, and the villages south of the city stopped being far away. The commuter suburb begins at this point. 8 7
- 1865 to 1909: Johann Anton Wilhelm Carstenn laid out Lichterfelde as a villa suburb and landed the Haupt-Kadettenanstalt for it. The first electric tram ran there in 1881. The Botanischer Garten was newly established in Groß-Lichterfelde between 1897 and 1909. 9
- 1920 to 1932: both became Berlin administrative districts in 1920, and the Onkel-Tom-Siedlung went up between 1926 and 1932. Of the imperial and Weimar-era villa colony at Wannsee, only a few houses remain. 10 11
- 1945 to 1994: West Berlin, American occupation zone. The 1961 Wall sealed the Potsdam boundary and left Steinstücken stranded on the far side, an enclave the US Army guarded until the border opened. The Americans left in 1994, and the traces are still legible in the former allied sites and the English-speaking institutions. 2 10 11
Source gap: how much of the district the war destroyed, neighbourhood by neighbourhood, is not something the checked sources answer. Beyond the documented Wannsee villa stock, survival at building level remains unverified. 12
