Current description
This file uses Treptow for the urban river and park area around Alt-Treptow. The area grew from agriculture and fishing into an industrial, residential and working district, while Treptower Park became its main open space. 1 Current planning treats green space as a pressure point because Treptow-Köpenick is growing and open land is tending to decline. 2
Why visit
Treptower Park combines river paths, large lawns and the Sowjetisches Ehrenmal. The memorial replaced the park’s former Hippodrom and was opened on 8 May 1949. 3 The area also supports a visit focused on difficult history. The exhibition “zurückgeschaut | looking back” examines the 1896 colonial exhibition in Treptower Park and the biographies and resistance of the 106 people displayed there. 4
When to skip
Skip Treptower Park around 1 May if the aim is a quiet walk or undamaged lawns. In 2026 the district deployed park runners because of recurring waste and parties, and later reporting described substantial damage and litter after the May events. 5 6 A reliable current source for quieter hours on ordinary days was not found. unverified.
History
- 6th to 19th century: Alt-Treptow began as a Slavic settlement shaped by farming and fishing. Industrialisation brought factories, railways and more housing, while Treptower Park was laid out as a public park from 1876. 1 7
- 1896: Treptower Park hosted the First German Colonial Exhibition. A discriminatory display presented 106 people from German colonies, and the Archenhold-Sternwarte remains a surviving structure from the exhibition period. 4 8
- 1945 to 1949: Fighting damaged the park area, and the Soviet military administration replaced the central Hippodrom with a Soviet war memorial and cemetery. The memorial opened on 8 May 1949. 3
- 1961 to 1990: The Berlin Wall cut Treptow off from the West Berlin districts of Kreuzberg and Neukölln. Treptow remained an industrial, media, military, residential and working area in divided Berlin. 7 9
- 1990s to 2001: After reunification, Alt-Treptow developed into a renovated old-building area with new riverside paths and a mixed population. In 2001 Treptow and Köpenick became one Berlin district. 1 7
